O preocupare de psihologie, in ultima analiza, o tentativa saint-beuveiana de a descoperi “omul in dosul operei” stimuleaza travaliul exegetic de amploare din G. Calinescu - romancier. Acest volum studiaza minutios “puterea centripeta” si cea “centrifuga” din lumea romanelor calinesciene, modul atitudinal al scriitorului in raport cu obiectul operei sale, propensiunea lui catre joc, spre a conchide, in final, ca ludicul disimuleaza, dupa toate probabilitatile, tragicul. A concern with psychology, in the last analysis, a Sainte-Beuvean attempt to discover “the man behind the work”, stimulates the ample exegesis in G. Calinescu as a Novelist. The book is a minute study of the “centripetal” and “centrifugal force” in Calinescu's novels, of the author's attitude towards the object of his work, of his penchant for play, to conclude in the end that the ludic, in all probability, dissimulates the tragic.
