In literatura noastra, romanul vietii de provincie are o traditie care coboara din Sadoveanu (Locul unde nu s-a intamplat nimic) pana la Mihail Sebastian (Orasul cu salcami). Gabriel Chifu e aici un inovator, dupa Paul Georgescu, indreptandu-si insa eforturile in alta directie decat el. Am putea-o numi, la prima vedere, o dostoievskianizare a romanului de provincie. (Ov. In the Romanian literature, the novel about provincial life has a tradition that goes from Sadoveanu (The Place Where Nothing Happened) to Mihail Sebastian (The Town with Acacias). After Paul Georgescu, Gabriel Chifu is an innovator in this respect, but his endeavours are concentrated in a different direction. We could call this direction a Dostoevsky-sation of the provincial novel. (Ov. S. Crohmalniceanu)
