Kevin Costner was born in 1955, in Los Angeles. He was a talented athelete in high school that’s why he wanted to become a professional baseball but he enrolled at California State University, Fullerton instead, graduating in 1978 with a degree in marketing. He gradually became interested in acting and, after playing some roles in community theater, he decided to pursue a career in Hollywood, California, as an actor.
Costner landed a number of small parts in the early 1980s and, after a near-miss with a role in the motion picture The Big Chill (1983) that was edited out of the film, he got his first real break in 1983 playing a nuclear-war survivor in the film Testament. His portrayal of a gunfighter in Silverado (1985) established Costner as a leading actor. Several highly successful films followed, in which his performances in a wide variety of roles won him appreciation from audiences and increased respect within the film industry. These include his portrayals of Eliot Ness in The Untouchables (1987), a navy officer and spy in No Way Out (1987), a baseball player in Bull Durham (1988), and a farmer caught up in a fantasy in Field of Dreams (1989).
Wishing also to produce and direct, Costner formed his own production company and, in association with Orion Pictures Corporation, directed, coproduced, and starred in the ambitious three-hour-long film Dances with Wolves (1990), the story of a Civil War-era soldier and the Sioux people. A stunning commercial success, the film won seven Academy Awards, including those for best picture and best director. Costner's next two films, both released in 1991, were also well received: JFK, about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Costner also starred in The Bodyguard (1992) with Whitney Houston and in A Perfect World (1993), in which his role was that of an escaped convict pursued by a Texas Ranger, played by Clint Eastwood. Costner returned to directing with Wyatt Earp (1994) and Waterworld (1995), also starring in both.
